The Square

The Square is the central open space of Wickham, one of the largest village squares in England. The space was laid out as a planned medieval market place and retains its generous proportions. The Kings Head pub, the village stores, Greens restaurant, and a number of other businesses front onto The Square. The war memorial stands on the central island, shaded by mature trees. The Square is the venue for the annual Wickham Festival, the Christmas fair, and community markets. Surrounding buildings include Georgian brick houses, older timber-framed cottages, and Victorian additions. The conservation area covers the entire square. Roads from Winchester, Fareham, and Botley converge here, making it the crossroads and the social centre of the village.
