Bridge Street
Street guide, Wickham
Bridge Street runs south from The Square to the bridge over the River Meon, forming one of the most historically important streets in Wickham. The Chesapeake Mill, built in 1820 from timbers salvaged from the captured USS Chesapeake, stands on Bridge Street and is the village's most distinctive landmark. The street has a mix of period cottages, Georgian houses, and some later additions. The bridge itself is a stone structure that crosses the clear chalk stream of the Meon. Beyond the bridge, the road continues south towards Fareham. The lower part of Bridge Street, near the river, has a quieter character than the upper part near The Square. Footpaths branch off along the river in both directions, providing attractive walks.
