Walking Routes from Wickham
Paths, trails, and countryside walks
Wickham is an excellent base for walking, with the Meon Valley Trail, the River Meon, and the Hampshire countryside all within easy reach of The Square.
The Meon Valley Trail is the most popular walking route, following the former railway line north from Wickham through the Meon Valley. The trail is flat, well-surfaced, and suitable for walkers of all abilities. It passes through farmland and woodland, with the chalk downland of the South Downs visible to the north. The walk from Wickham to Droxford is approximately four miles one way, and the trail can be extended to West Meon and beyond.
The River Meon provides riverside walking south from Bridge Street, following the chalk stream through water meadows and farmland. The Meon is a clear, fast-flowing stream, and the paths along it pass through some of the most attractive landscape in the area. The walk can be extended south towards Knowle and the lower Meon Valley.
Circular walks from the village can be constructed using the footpaths and bridleways that cross the surrounding countryside. Routes heading west towards Southwick pass through rolling farmland with views across the Meon Valley. Paths heading north connect to the common and the agricultural land beyond.
Wickham Common provides a shorter walk on the doorstep, with paths through grassland and scrub that can be completed in under an hour. The common is popular with dog walkers and families seeking a quick outing without driving anywhere.
The terrain around Wickham is gently undulating rather than steeply hilly, making most walks accessible to people of varying fitness. Paths can be muddy in winter, particularly along the river and through the water meadows, so waterproof footwear is advisable from October to March.
