Wickham Bypass Opens

1988

The construction of the Wickham bypass removed through traffic from The Square and the village centre, transforming the quality of life in the village. Before the bypass, the A32 ran directly through The Square, bringing heavy traffic through the heart of the settlement. The bypass diverted this traffic around the eastern side of the village, allowing The Square to recover its character as a pedestrian-friendly space. The bypass was widely welcomed by residents and is credited with preserving the village's character and enabling the community life centred on The Square to flourish.
