Closure of the Meon Valley Railway

1955

The Meon Valley Railway closed to passenger traffic in 1955, ending Wickham's direct rail connection after just over fifty years of service. The line had never been commercially successful, and the rise of car ownership and bus services reduced demand further. The station buildings were demolished or converted, and the trackbed was gradually reclaimed. The closure removed a transport link but did not halt the village's growth. The former railway line was later converted into the Meon Valley Trail, a walking and cycling path that is now one of the area's most popular recreational routes.
