Medieval Market Charter Granted
1269
Wickham was granted a market charter in the thirteenth century, establishing its right to hold a regular market. The large square that defines the village today was laid out as the market place, and its generous proportions reflect the ambition of the planned medieval settlement. The market attracted traders and farmers from across the Meon Valley and beyond, making Wickham a local commercial centre. The charter elevated the village above its neighbours, giving it a civic status that is still reflected in the scale and character of The Square.
