Wickham Village Centre

The compact working heart of the village with shops, church, community facilities, and a mix of period and modern housing.

Wickham village centre extends beyond The Square to include the streets that branch off in all directions from the central space. The centre takes in the commercial heart of the village along with the older residential streets closest to The Square. The village retains a working post office, a village stores, Greens restaurant, a pharmacy, and a handful of other businesses that serve the daily needs of the community. The parish church of St Nicholas stands to the west of The Square, its tower visible from many points in the village. The community centre and the parish church hall both serve as venues for meetings, classes, and events. The housing in the village centre is a mix of periods, from timber-framed cottages to Georgian brick houses and some more modern infill. The conservation area covers the historic core and ensures that changes to the streetscape are managed. The village centre has a compact, walkable quality that allows residents to reach the shops, the pub, the church, and the community facilities on foot. The centre is not a museum piece; it is a working village with cars parked along the streets and people going about their daily business. But the scale and the architecture give it a quality that is increasingly rare in Hampshire villages.
